About Breast Augmentation
Also referred to as augmentation mammaplasty, breast augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure designed to enhance the fullness and volume of a woman’s breasts. This is accomplished with the insertion of breast implants, which comes in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and compositions. Implants are placed either above or below the chest muscle through either an areola incision, breast crease incision, or armpit incision. Each breast augmentation surgery is tailored to the individual; Dr. Daniel Brown offers his expert advice and help patients decide which options will provide them with optimal results.
There is no such thing as perfect breasts; there is too wide a range of variation in size, shape, and individual preference. However, Dr. Brown strives to deliver on each patient’s aesthetic goals, providing them with a proportional, symmetrical, and perky bust that meets their cosmetic standards.

Implants Types, Positions & Incisions
Silicone implants are prefilled and semi-solid in form. The gel is similar to the feel of a natural breast.
Gummy bear implants are a form-stable silicone implant that, true to its name, feels much like a gummy bear. The composition is slightly thicker than the gel of a traditional silicone implant.
Saline implants are inserted as empty shells and then filled with a saline solution to the patient’s desired size. Dr. Brown does not make direct contact with saline implants at all as a no-touch technique is used.
This incision is made along the lower border of the areola. Periareolar incisions are discreet since they naturally blend with the already distinct border between the breast and areola.
This incision is made within the crease of the breast fold. The incision sites will eventually fade and blend in with the natural creases.
This small incision is made on the armpit. An axillary incision is ideal for women who wish for extremely discreet incision lines.
Sub-muscular placement refers to an implant being placed in a pocket created behind the chest muscle. This placement is typically used for women who don’t have a large amount of natural breast tissue because the muscle can act as coverage of the edges of the implant.
Sub-glandular placement refers to an implant being placed in a pocket created in front of the chest muscle but behind natural breast tissue. This placement is ideal for women with a substantial amount of natural breast tissue since the tissue itself can act as coverage for implant edges.
Candidates for breast augmentation surgery are women who are at a stable weight, in good health, and desire larger breasts. Women considering breast augmentation may have given birth, lost a large amount of weight, or simply desire a cosmetic change. Other reasons someone may want a breast augmentation is to correct asymmetry or enhance a previous breast surgery.
It is important to understand the limitations of breast augmentation and what it can accomplish. Breast augmentation surgery provides women with an increased breast size, but it does not inherently increase self-esteem. However, in majority of cases women say they experienced a large increase in self confidence and body image. Breast augmentation surgery should also not be sought to please anyone but the patient. It should be undergone because the patient herself desires an increase in size.
Your consultation will consist of a one-on-one conversation with Dr. Brown in either his La Jolla, Coronado, or Del Mar locations. You will discuss the likes and dislikes of your breasts, as well as your desired outcome. Dr. Brown will then perform an examination to determine if breast augmentation is the right procedure for you, and if so, you and he together will come up with a customized surgical plan that will provide you with optimal results. Decisions such as implant size, composition, and placement will be based on your aesthetic wants, body proportions, and your particular anatomy. Questions and concerns will gladly be answered at this time; we want to make sure you are fully comfortable with your decision to undergo breast augmentation surgery.
Preparing for Surgery
- Please arrange transportation to take you home from surgery.
- It is recommended to have someone stay with you the first night of recovery.
- Refrain from taking anti-inflammatory medication and smoking for the three weeks leading up to your surgery date.
- Arm range of motion will be limited for a while, so please place all necessary recovery items (ice packs, TV remotes, reading material, etc.) at counter level.
- Make sure you have enough pillows at home to keep your back slightly propped up while resting or sleeping.
- Bring a large shirt that wraps around you (as opposed to a pullover) to wear after surgery. You should not lift your arms for a while to avoid putting pressure on the incision locations.
- Additional customized instructions will be given to help ensure optimal individual results.
Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Markings will first be made on the exact incision locations to ensure accuracy. When the patient is anesthetized, incisions are made following the guidance of the markings; this will either be at the base of the areolas, the base of the breasts, or on the armpits. Any of these locations will result in inconspicuous scarring that will naturally blend in with time. A pocket is then created either in front or behind the chest muscle depending on what was decided on during your consultation. Dr. Brown inserts the implants with a keen eye for symmetry, and the incisions are then closed. A compression garment or surgical support bra will be placed on patients to help the breasts form to their new contour and reduce swelling.
When patients are fully awake and comfortable, typically in 1 to 2 hours, they will return home with a friend or family member. For comfort and convenience, professional home nursing care can be arranged upon request. Dr. Brown and his staff will advise patients on ongoing breast health by providing detailed information regarding when you can resume work, exercise and other activities, demonstrating how to give yourself a breast self examination, and discussing the potential need for future mammography.
Breast augmentation creates a voluptuous, full bust, but undergoing other body contouring procedures during your surgical session can create spectacular results. Some popular procedures to pair with breast augmentation are breast lift, liposuction, tummy tuck, or the all encompassing mommy makeover.
Sagging breasts can sometimes be remedied with just breast augmentation, but in cases of extreme sagging, a breast lift may need to be performed simultaneously with the insertion of implants for a lifted, perky bust. Excess skin is removed to lift the breasts, and if desired the nipples can be reduced in size to make them more proportional.
Liposuction is a fantastic body contouring procedure that gets rid of fat deposits resistant to exercise and diet. Performing liposuction on the abdomen, arms, or back can create the illusion of even greater breasts projection. Liposuction can also be performed on other areas of the body such as the thighs, love handles, or calves. And depending what Dr. Brown sees fit for your case, SmartLipo and VASER lipo are available liposuction techniques at the La Jolla, Coronado, and Del Mar locations. SmartLipo first melts the fat with laser energy, while VASER lipo destroys the fat with ultrasound wavelengths.
A tummy tuck is another popular body contouring choice. Tummy tucks tighten the abdominal wall and excise loose skin to create a trim, defined midsection. There are several tummy tuck techniques; a consultation with Dr. Brown will determine the best technique for the individual case.
When performed on mothers, the combination of the aforementioned body and breast enhancing procedures is referred to as a mommy makeover. These procedures remedy the physical changes caused by childbirth and breastfeeding.
The price of breast augmentation surgery varies based on the customization of the procedure, and whether patients choose to undergo other body contouring procedures in the same surgical session. After a consultation examination, Dr. Brown will be able to provide a custom quote. Feel free to contact us today to request your breast augmentation consultation.
