HOW TO PREPARE FOR BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY
In anticipation of your procedure, you will need to stop smoking a few weeks before and after your procedure to promote a healthy healing process. Avoid taking medications like aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements that will negatively affect your blood flow.
Arrangements will need to be made to ensure you have a ride home after the procedure. We also recommend that you have someone stay with you the first night of your recovery. When you get ready the morning of your appointment, be sure to wear clothes that are loose and can be zipped or buttoned. This will help avoid apply pressure to the incision sites.

TRADITIONAL BREAST REDUCTION SURGICAL TECHNIQUES
When you arrive on your scheduled procedure date, the predetermined areas will be cleaned and marked for incision. General anesthesia and sedation will be administered intravenously to provide a restful, comfortable experience. Once you have fallen asleep, Dr. Brown will apply a combination of incisions that will provide your best results.
Incision options include:
- A circular pattern around the areola
- An incision around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease
- An inverted T pattern
Dr. Brown will proceed to remove excess tissue and trim unnecessary skin. This procedure may require liposuction techniques to remove excess fat deposits. The nipple will remain connected to its blood and nerve supply but will be repositioned to its natural location. If the areola has become stretched and elongated it will be trimmed and restored to a natural shape.
Once your ideal appearance has been achieved, Dr. Brown will close the incisions to reshape the breasts. Sutures may be layered deep within the breasts to support the new breasts and help them adjust to their new shape. This procedure often takes two to five hours.
RECOVERY
When you leave your surgery, your breasts will be bandaged and you will be wearing an elastic bandage. The elastic bandage will act as a support bra to minimize swelling and help adjust your breasts to their new shape. This garment must be worn for a few weeks as your chest heals. Small, thin tubes called drains may be placed under certain areas with incisions to help the flow of excess fluids. These drains will be temporary and removed after a few days.
Dr. Brown will walk you through the care of your breasts, medications to control discomfort and when to schedule a follow-up appointment. At your follow-up appointments, Dr. Brown will monitor your healing process, remove drains and notify you when to return to regular activities. Patients often return to work after a week.
